Defecting Blame in Shaw

D.C. Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), our representative for 16 years, misrepresented our community in his March 2 Close to Home piece,

"It Takes More Than Police to Fight Crime in Shaw." Mr. Evans blamed the community, describing it as "split and broken" and "pointing fingers" as

"violence rages." In doing so, he pointed fingers and avoided taking reasonable responsibility for the problems himself.

It would be hard for any community to match Shaw's in the intensity and hours of volunteerism and activism to improve our quality of life. Perhaps if Mr. Evans and his staff and D.C.

government agencies had been more responsive and results-oriented, Shaw residents would not have had to endure for so long rundown libraries, parks and schools; vacant properties; poor communications about vocational training programs and jobs for youths; poorly managed public housing; erratic policing; and delayed economic development.

We need a council member who will find real solutions, not write disparaging commentaries.
