Police and Public Safety
Police Service Area 308 Community Meeting, 04/13/06
By Alex Padro
Apr 11, 2006, 08:05

In recent weeks, a number of incidents and patterns of activity have raised concerns about public safety in central Shaw: two shootings between individuals known to be involved in drug and gang activities, gang members 'beefing' day and night, and an increase in observed drug transactions on the street. These incidents and activities need to be brought back under control before the summer months, which traditionally bring an increase in crime.

On Thursday, April 13, 2006, at 6:30 PM at United House of Prayer, 1721-1/2 7th Street, NW, Police Service Area 308, which covers the area roughly bounded by 9th Street, S Street, New Jersey Avenue, and New York Avenue, NW, will hold its monthly community meeting. This is an opportunity for residents to express their concerns and their observations about criminal activity in the neighborhood directly with the PSA lieutenant and officers responsible for maintaining public safety in the area.

PSA 308 Lieutenant Ralph Neal will discuss some of the measures that are being undertaken to address the recent increase in criminal activity in the neighborhood, and will discuss an action plan to address these issues proactively. He will also discuss crime statistics for the past month, including which crimes have been closed through arrest.

If you have concerns about public safety in the neighborhood, I invite you to attend the meeting and raise them. You can also contact Lt. Neal at 202-673-7403 and

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
