YESTERDAY ON a washingtonpost.com chat with local developer Jim Abdo, a question was asked about whether there is "a Harris Teeter going up at 3rd and H NE, or is that a rumor?"
Abdo responded: We understand that the Harris Teeter will be coming to 3rd and H, right across the street from our Landmark Lofts (the former Children's Museum). It will be a mixed used development with other smaller retail uses and about 200+ rental apartments above. I have seen the plans ... in fact they are sitting here on my desk ... and they look great.
If this is the first you have heard of a Harris Teeter at 3rd and H streets NE (the one pictured here, by the way, is in Falls Church), you might be wondering about the countless proposals for other grocery stores around the District. There's been much debate recently over the future of groceries in Columbia Heights and Gallery Place/Penn Quarter, but some others haven't snagged as much press.
Here's an update on the projects we know of:
» Safeway, Mount Vernon Triangle (5th and K streets NW): Under construction.
» Whole Foods, Columbia Heights (14th and Irving streets NW): Neighbors trying to seduce Whole Foods, stay tuned.
» Balducci's, Penn Quarter (7th Street NW, between D and E streets): Balducci's pulled out, but now they're reconsidering.
» Harris Teeter, Jenkins Row, (Pennsylvania and Potomac avenues SE): Still planned, according to the Jenkins Row developers.
» Trader Joe's, West End/Foggy Bottom, (25th Street NW between L and M streets): A Trader Joe's spokeswoman tells us that rumors of a September opening are not true. Though no opening date has been settled on, it is "slated for sometime in the fourth quarter."
» Harris Teeter, Adams Morgan (Kalorama Road and 17th Street NW): Rumors have been swirling about a potential Harris Teeter for this part of Adams Morgan, but the narrow streets surrounding the site and the proximity to the possible Columbia Heights Whole Foods reportedly have been stumbling blocks. A Harris Teeter spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.
