With summer here and rolling thunder behind us, Councilmember Evans sees this weekend's Shaw Bike Festival as a perfect opportunity to meet your neighbors and learn a few things about bicycle safety and maintenance. The festival on Saturday, June 18 from 10 am - 2 pm will be held at the Shaw Recreation Center, 10th Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NW (Shaw/Howard U Metrorail).

The event, held by Shaw EcoVillage Project and Manna Community Development Corporation creates a greener, cleaner and healthier Shaw neighborhood. There will be arts and crafts, face painting and food.

"The Bike Fest attracts a lot of folks and has become a day where the entire family can come out, participate in bike games, get bike safety checks and join in on the raffle of bike-related services and items donated by local businesses," Evans said. "Shaw Eco Village continues to do a great job in the Shaw community. Their work with at-risk youth through the EcoDesign Corps and Chain Reaction Bike Shop is terrific."

Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success by helping with: clean up and preparation, the Shaw Historic Bike Tour, the obstacle course, face painting, slowest person race, bike crafts, the food table, the bike museum and the registration table.

Volunteers are needed for three shifts. The "Pre-Event Shift" will run from 9:30 am - 11:00 a.m. Volunteers will set-up and clean-up the site or act as ride marshals for the Shaw Historic Bike Tour.

The "Early Shift," will run from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm staffing activities at the Bike Fest. The "Late Shift" will run from 12:30 - 2:30 pm also staffing activities at the Bike Fest.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Noel Petrie, Outreach and Development Director at the Shaw EcoVillage Project, at 202-265-1561 or sev.noelpetrie@verizon.net.

For more information, contact Evans' Shaw neighborhood liaison, Windy Abdul-Rahim.
