Watha T. Daniel Library
The meeting to present 70% plans for the 14,000 square foot proposed replacement for the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library, originally scheduled for Monday, December 13, 2004 at 7:00 PM at the branch, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at the same time and place. This information only became available this morning, so please let friends and neighbors know that the meeting has been rescheduled. Flyers for the original meeting date had been distributed and posted at the branch for several weeks.
The flyers for the meeting caused significant confusion in the community, as it was widely known that the Williams administration had repeatedly stated that the proposed 14,000 square foot library was to be replaced with a larger, mixed use building. People were asking why a meeting was being held to review plans that would not be built.
The meeting was most likely rescheduled as a result of assurances provided by City Administrator Robert Bobb to Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans on Thursday, December 2, 2004, that funding would be provided for a full replacement of the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library, without any requirement for mixed use development. Councilmember Evans assures us that this commitment is solid and that we will not be settling for losing 10,000 square feet of space at the branch by allowing the demolition and replacement of the existing building to move forward.
Also, the closure of the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library originally scheduled for the end of December 2004 is expected to be moved to at least the end of January 2005, and possibly later.
I will continue to monitor this situation and will advise the community of additional information as it becomes available.
