Beginning in 2015, students in the UF landscape architecture program, together with other Gainesville community members, created PopGNV.

Park(ing) Day originated in 2005 with a San Francisco art and design studio called Rebar. The original idea was to create a discussion about how valuable urban public space is used.

Based on PARK(ING) DAY website, pop up park was started in San Francisco by Rebar, an art and design studio, started with changing a car zone into a park. The size of the park can be vary from a park as small as one single parking spot into a whole block. Nowadays, the concept is been adaptable to address any social and urban issues, it’s becoming the urban culture.

Being surrounded with parks and recreation area, I feel lucky living in Gainesville, Florida. Unfortunately, there’s no park can be found in downtown and of course, just like any other growing cities, Gainesville turns some of the green area into building complex.

Inspired from the PARK(ING) DAY succeed, Florida Community Design Center (FCDC), a non-profit organization, planning to organize a pop up park event called POP GNV. it will be held on September 18th-19th, 2015 at 101 N Main Street – across the street from The TOP restaurant. Started in Fall 2014, FCDC is excited to host the event.
